Wednesday, June 20, 7 p.m. Local author Scott Hurst will read from and sign his new novel, Open Fire: J. Golden Kimball Takes on the South. J. Golden Kimball was known as the swearing general authority in the early 20th century. Every time he rode the speaking circuit, complaints filtered back to Salt Lake City about his colorful language from the pulpit. But just as many if not more clamored for him to return and speak again. People loved J. Golden because they knew that he loved the people. He was a rough-hewn cowboy who grew to become one of the most beloved general authorities of all time. Working with the late James Kimball, J. Golden's great nephew, who generously shared his research and family stories, Hurst has created a lively account, tracing the path of the future general authority from a reluctant missionary into a strong and faithful church leader. |
